Camp fYrefly was founded in 2004 as a university-community education project at the University of Alberta.The camp is an educational, lifeskills, personal, and social learning retreat for sexual minority and gender variant youth between the ages of 14 and 20. Through structured workshops, Camp fYrefly focuses on building and nurturing leadership skills, social understanding, and self-esteem in an effort to help youth learn how to make significant contributions to their own lives and to their schools, home/group environments, and communities.
